In 2019, Marietta asked me to design a logo for her new endeavor–a traveling exhibit that expresses concern about violence again women, girls, and mother nature. Patchwork: A Healing Blanket/Manta de Curación was born. Two years later, my students in Hawaii wanted to pitch in. We studied local quilt-making and gender inequality in terms of legislation, health, and income. It was eye-opening.

We fact-checked with experts in the field, chose a color palette, sketched ideas, and then drew our final drafts. Then the layering began. Three generations dyed, but and stitched the fabric into one powerful chorus of young voices.

Students also wrote artist statements about their process. Aiden wrote, “My drawing was to show how people can hurt each other … for almost nothing.” everybody expressed hopes for healing minds, bodies, and lands in our community and beyond.
